1821<$2 1/2> AU55 NGC. Bass-3018, Breen-6126, R.4. No quarters eagles had been struck since 1808, but the denomination was reactivated in 1821. Robert Scot simply adapted his 1813 half eagle design and reduced the size of the hub. Also, the diameter was reduced from the previous 20.6 mm. to the new standard of 19 mm. To compensate for the smaller diameter, the thickness of the planchets was increased slightly so there was no net gain or loss in weight. As with most known 1821 quarter eagles, some slight softness of details can be seen where the eagle's left (facing) wing joins the shield. There is additional softness on the eagle's right (facing) wingtip and on the claws. The surfaces have a bright green-gold coloration with a hint of reflectivity in the fields. Numerous small abrasions are scattered over each side along with several moderate-sized ones as well. Census: 2 in 55, 12 finer (11/05).
From The John H. Schroeder Collection.
