1821 1C MS62 Brown NGC. N-2, R.1. This is considered one of the key dates in the Coronet Head series. The design type is also known by the alternative name of Matron Head, perhaps for the dignified, motherly look of Liberty. Two die varieties are known for the year and these share a common obverse die. The differences on the reverse involve the position of leaves and lettering, with one of the best diagnostics being the relationship between the C of AMERICA and the leaf below. This leaf is distant from the C on this Newcomb-2 variety, and the leaf touches the C on the N-1 variety.
The surfaces show reflectivity in the fields, and have pleasing steel-brown color with splashes of iridescent toning. Light abrasions are seen on both sides, as well as a few faint scratches. The most noticeable defect is a frisbee-shaped scrape on Liberty's neck. It is this individual mark that will help trace the pedigree of this specimen. Lot:5137
