1820 North West Company Brass Token--Genuine--NCS. Breen-1083. The 1820 North West tokens, which come in brass or copper varieties, were the only tokens known to circulate in the Oregon area before it was acquired by the United States from Canada. A small hoard found in the Umpqua River Valley comprises most known examples. This piece is holed at 12 o'clock, as are all but two known examples. The brassy green-gold surfaces are mildly granular. Faint scratches pass through a spot above the bust truncation, and the obverse has a couple of trivial retained laminations. NCS does not designate a sharpness, but we suggest Fine 12 Details. Included with the lot is an interesting set of Indian beads, acquired with the North West token by the consignor. Listed on page 74 of the 2007 Guide Book.
