This is the scarcest of the 1820 half dollar varieties -- it is in the Red Book, therefore collectors find they need to own it but often come up empty when an attempt is made to find one. The present offering is very choice, attractively toned, and we've carefully graded it for you. Apparently a defective "E" punch was used on the legends on the reverse, the only time this punch was used. (Perhaps the die maker had been hitting the punch once too often? Actually, in the early days at the U.S. Mint, the mint workers were given a daily allowance of beer to drink on the often tiring hot job! Try that today at the Mint and see if the gendarmes don't come knocking on your door. Note: beer was safer to drink in those days than was the local water supply.)
