1820 $5 Square 2 MS64 PCGS. Breen-6476, BD-3, R.5. Three merged dentils between stars 8 and 9 identify this Square Base 2 obverse. Two different reverse dies were used with the obverse, and the BD-3 variety is distinguished by the position of I in PLURIBUS that is below the upright of the second T in STATES. The BD-4 variety has this I positioned below the extreme right base of the T.
John Dannreuther's early gold reference has cleared up decades of confusion about the 1820 half eagle varieties. Known obverse and reverse dies were combined to form several nonexistent varieties in some earlier references, while others compiled variety descriptions from all of the earlier sources. One reference actually lists 13 different varieties for the date.
Dannreuther records six obverse and six reverse dies that were combined to make nine different varieties. The BD-3 die combination is the only common one among all nine, yet less than 60 pieces are known in all grades. Using notes compiled by Harry Bass about his coins, Dannreuther also included limited die state information. Study of die states among the early gold varieties is still in its infancy. He listed two die states for BD-3. The early state is from perfect obverse and reverse dies that have no clash marks, die lapping, cracks, or rust marks. The late state, although still not cracked, has rust marks, clash marks, and lapping on both dies.
An intermediate die state, unclashed and uncracked, this piece has rust marks on both sides and evidence of lapping only on the reverse. Frosty luster and sharp designs are boldly evident, accompanied by a few minor blemishes that include a hidden scratch in the shield. Highly appealing and desirable with brilliant yellow surfaces. Population: 11 in 64, 3 finer (7/07).

Coin Engraver: John Reich

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
