1820 $5 Square 2 MS63 PCGS. Large Letters, Breen-6476, BD-3, R.5. As rare as the 1820 is, the date is the third or fourth most available within the excruciatingly difficult Capped Head Left series. 1813 is easily the most common date of the type, and the 1818 takes a distant second place. The 1820 are 1814/3 are plentiful only when compared to such fantastic rarities as the 1822 (three known), 1825/4 (two known), 1828/7 (five known), and 1832 12 Stars (five known). Due to a high recorded mintage of 263,806 pieces, nine die marriages are known for the 1820. Each ranges from rare to very rare, since the vast majority of the issue was exported and eventually melted. BD-3 is distinguished from other varieties by presence of two die lumps left of the ball of the 5. This sharply struck example lacks identifying marks, although a few wispy abrasions are noted beneath the chin. Olive-green toning outlines design recesses, while the fields are pumpkin-gold.
From The Julian Collection.

Coin Engraver: John Reich

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
