1820 $5 Square 2 MS63 PCGS. Breen-6476, BD-3, R.5. In 1820, a record total of 263,806 half eagles were minted, the highest production prior to the reduced weight standard of the 1834 Classic Head coins. Not surprisingly, a large number of individual die varieties are known with nine documented obverse and reverse die combinations. Perhaps surprising to some might be the relatively small number of examples that still exist today. John Dannreuther provided survival estimates for each of the nine varieties in Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties. For all nine varieties combined, Dannreuther suggested that only 116 to 157 examples still exist, and more than one-third of that total is for this single variety, the most plentiful of the year. This piece is fully lustrous with brilliant yellow-gold surfaces and lovely orange toning highlights. It is a sharply defined piece with only a few surface marks on each side.
From The Temecula Collection, Part Two.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
