1820 $5 Curl 2, Small Letters MS61 PCGS. Ex: Harry W.
1820 $5 Curl 2, Small Letters MS61 PCGS. Ex: Harry W. Bass, Jr. Breen-6478, BD-8, High R.7. The half eagles of 1820 are divided into nine varieties depending on the style of the 2's base and the size of the reverse lettering. This piece is among the Curl Base 2, Small Letters variants, which include the BD-6 and BD-8. While the BD-6 has the lowest tight hair curl mostly over the 2 in the date, the BD-8 has that curl mostly over the 0. The bottom of the 2 points to the right side of a dentil. The reverse letters are small, and the lowest arrow points to the bottom of the C in AMERICA. The tip of an arrow feather is over the right side of 5 in the denomination.
This coin is different from that pictured in the Bass Museum Sylloge (and duplicated in the Dannreuther-Bass Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties), because it is the second example of this R.7+ (four to six pieces known) variety that Harry Bass owned. Nonetheless, most of his comments in those volumes are pertinent. Especially notable are the following, which we summarize: Star 7 points in front of a cap angle; star 8 points at a cap angle. A minute die center punch is in front of the ear. Vertical rust lumps show in the field at the tip of the front lock, and in front of L. On the reverse there are distinctive raised horizontal line fragments within openings of the shield's lower section.
Although not noted in those references, the eagle's left (facing) wing shows a small spine of metal at the tip, and there is a dotlike die rust spot nearby at the border. This delightful piece shows good luster and attractive green-gold color with a bit of light field chatter on each side. Light die rust shows microscopically on the portrait, visible under a glass. A pleasing and historic Mint State coin of the utmost rarity, from one of the most difficult U.S. coin series, and pedigreed to the fabled Bass Collection. It doesn't get any better than this.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
