1820<1C> Large Date MS67 Brown NGC. N-13, R.1. An often encountered Randall Hoard variety with a multiply repunched L in LIBERTY and heavy die cracks (as made) that connect the stars. The famous hoard consisted of a buried keg of Mint State large cents dated 1816 to 1820 that was found in 1868 by a Georgia merchant. After passing through various intermediaries, most of the hoard ended up in the possession of John Swan Randall, a Norwich, N.Y. collector who was prominent in hobby circles in the 1870s. This attractive specimen features glossy light brown patina interspersed with considerable mint red. The design elements are sharply struck, save for the usual softness on the star centers. The remarkably clean and well preserved surfaces display just a couple of trivial, unobtrusive marks on Liberty's chin. While numerous Uncirculated examples of this issue are extant, few can compare with the outstanding quality of this Superb Gem. This is evident from the NGC population figures shown below, as well from auction records which indicate only one MS67 appearance within the last ten or so years. Population: 3 in 67, 0 finer (5/05).
