The reverse die of this variety, in a much later die state with heavily lapped surfaces, found its way out of the Mint as scrap steel and was used as the reverse of the 1804 Restrike. Many different stories exist to substantiate this fact with some stating that the Mint sold the old dies as scrap steel in the 1830s, and other accounts placing the date in the late 1850s. The latter seems unlikely as the Mint was actively restriking its own coins by that time, and might have kept the dies for its own use. A sale of scrap steel in January 1833 might be logical in association with the move from the first Mint to the second Mint building. In any event, the old coinage dies eventually found their way to Joseph Mickley, and some were included in an auction catalog of items from his estate. More information about the large cent restrikes may be found in an article by this cataloger that appeared in the 1996 Coinage of the Americas Conference book on large cents.
A perfect die state with extraordinary design definition, including all of Liberty's individual hair strands and curls on the obverse, and all of the fine leaf detail on the reverse. The borders are sharp except at the upper reverse where centering is less than perfect. The surfaces have full cartwheel luster that is somewhat subdued. Both sides have intermingled medium brown and lighter tan color with decided olive tones. The surfaces have very few marks of any kind.
Ex: Dr. Kenneth Sartoris; Del Bland; Dr. Robert J. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers. All final auction and invoice information will be supplied by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers, and all other information should be considered preliminary. Lot:3454
