1820<10C> Small 0 JR-4, R.5.--Damaged--NCS. VF Details. Gunmetal gray surfaces with golden-brown highlights. The damage referred to on the NCS label is a large filed area on the rim above the last two stars, cutting clear through to the reverse, in addition, there are some moderate hairline scratches visible with a loupe on both sides. The obverse die state is advanced with a prominent bulge extending from the second to the fourth stars. A very scarce die pairing that is seldom found at all, and all too often with problems as seen here. It is interesting to see that several of these early dimes were purchased from the authors of Early United States Dimes 1796 to 1837 particularly during the early 1980s. During this period the authors were working on their variety book and Jules was assisting the authors, and many duplicates were offered to Jules which stayed in his collection.
Ex: Russell J.
