Ornate 1819 Dated “James Monroe” Signed Land Grant
JAMES MONROE (1758-1831). 5th President of the United States. During the War of 1812, Monroe held the critical roles of both Secretary of State and the Secretary of War under President James Madison.
October 1819-Dated, Partly-Printed Document Signed, “James Monroe” as President and Countersigned by Josiah Meigs, 1 page, measuring 13” x 9.75”, Washington, on Vellum, Choice Very Fine. Being a Land Grant to “Peter Howard late Private in Humphreys Corps of Artillery”. This special Military Land Grant Document has a highly ornate vignette in the upper left corner, and grants Howard 160 Acres of land in the Territory of Illinois. Usual folds. Professionally framed together with an inset Engraving of James Monroe and has a brass name plaque inset into the mat below, to an overall size of 29.75” x 19.75”. This beautiful framing is very impressive, accomplished under UV Plexiglas, and is ready to hang on display.
