1819 $5 5D Over 50 AU58 NGC. B. 1-A, Miller-126, R.7. The 5D Over 50 was once considered the third rarest issue in the series. However, its true rarity has been revised in recent years. Today, it is generally considered that some 15-18 pieces are extant in all grades, and unlike other dates in the series, this is an issue that is often found in circulated grades. As the size of the under-0 in the denomination is the same as that found on the 0 in the denomination on the half dollar, it is generally believed that the engraver absent-mindedly thought he was working on a half dollar die. When he realized his mistake, he then overpunched the 0 with a D. This is the same mistake that is also displayed on the 1822 and 1828 quarters. The devices are fully defined on each side with sharp details on Liberty's hair curls, complete radials on the peripheral stars, and all the plumage on the eagle is fully brought up. Generous amounts of satiny mint luster remain over both sides and there are numerous small abrasions scattered about, but the only one that bears individual mention is a shallow scrape on the reverse above the eagle's head. A very scarce opportunity to acquire this "common" date in what is undoubtedly the most challenging series in all of U.S. numismatics. Population: 1 in 58, 3 finer (11/03). Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
