1818 N-4 R4+ PCGS graded AU58, CAC ApprovedAttractive glossy chocolate brown and steel with frosty lighter brown and tan in protected areas. The surfaces are smooth (except for the uneven texture on the obverse due to the later die state), and there are no significant contact marks. The only marks are a very faint diagonal hairline across the upper part of the cheek and a few very light marks at the O in ONE (which may be pre-striking planchet imperfections that didn't completely press out due to the usual weak strike in that area. LDS, die state d, with extensive swelling in the center of the obverse (which caused the weakness at the O in ONE) and a strong radial die crack from the dentils through star 3 into the field near the lips. A superb example of this classic rarity in the Middle Date Cent series. Called EF45 and CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says EF40 and tied for CC#1 honors with one other example, his photo #20688. The condition census quickly falls off following the top two with two grading VF30, two more at VF20, and two at F15. Most of the known examples are in low grade and many are net-graded due to significant defects. Our grade is EF40.Certificate Number: 36610.58/13094360Pedigree: Ex Thomas D. Reynolds (via Denis W.
