1818 50C MS63 ICG. O-110, R.4. This example is high in the Condition Census for this variety, and seems to be the second or third finest known. It is the finest that has been recorded for sale at auction in several years, and is exceeded by just one specimen per the Parsley Census in the new fourth edition of the Overton reference. There were no representatives of this variety in the Byers, Queller, Pittman, or Eliasberg Collections, for example. In Stephen Hermann's list of auction records for the early half dollars, only specialist Sheridan Downey has handled any examples in grades better than XF40 over the past decade. The present bidding opportunity represents a landmark offering. This lustrous Mint State piece has ivory and light silver mint frost with evidence of steel and gold peripheral iridescence. The reverse has a die crack through the tops of TED STAT, evident on every known example of the O-110 variety.
From The Westmoreland, Virginia Collection, Part Two.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
