1818 $5 STATESOF MS63 NGC. This would make an excellent choice for the type collector as this date and variety are one of the more plentiful issues of this design. The surfaces are attractive for the grade, and the green-gold surfaces are well defined overall with a rim-to-rim die crack on the reverse. This coin has the added bonus of the interesting reverse which shows the die engraving error of crowding the words STATESOF together, almost as though they were a single word. This same error occurred on a dime reverse die that was used in 1814 and again in 1820 (using the same die). Perhaps it was the same engraver who simply wasn't paying attention when laying out the placement of the lettering. Die engraving errors add greatly to the charm of coin collecting, showing that despite the best efforts at mechanizing the coining process, in theory to thwart counterfeiters, the human element constantly appears even in government work. This coin would certainly make a welcome addition to any advanced collection.
Purchased from Abner Kreisberg Corporation on July 11, 1980 for $15,000.
From The Beverly Hills Collection. Lot:7787
