1818<$5> MS60 NGC. Breen-6471, B. 1-A, Miller-123, R.5. The half eagles of 1818 were created from three dies each for the obverse and reverse, each mated monogamously with a single partner. The obverse die from this pairing is unique in that it features a "scalloped" or notched inner point on every obverse star. This is a signature of recently (1817) departed Mint Engraver John Reich, who created a notched star punch that was normally used on the 13th star of obverse dies from 1807 through 1815. The present example offers surfaces that are a pale greenish-gold, with deeper copper-gold accents around the device edges. On the reverse a die crack runs from the D in the denomination through the bases of AMERICA. Some light adjustment marks are seen in the reverse center.
From The Chief Paduke Collection.
