1818/5<25C> MS64 PCGS. B-1, R.2. A satiny and penetratingly struck example with dusky and original tan-gold toning. The reverse is remarkably unabraded save for a tick on the beak, and the obverse exhibits only minor grazes and a solitary faint mark on the neck. Both sides display moderate clash marks, as made. This overdate was caused, in part, by the fire in the Philadelphia Mint in 1815. The obverse die was never used in 1815 and the final date digit was subsequently repunched in 1818 to help curtail production costs. Population: 17 in 64, 9 finer (7/06).
Ex: William Walser Collection (Bowers and Merena, 7/02), lot 180.
