1818<1C> N-4, R.4. AU58 NGC. XF45 EAC. Here we have one of the stars of the Reiver Collection of middle date large cents. Although this variety is considered just Rarity-4 today, it was not that long ago that it was given at least the Rarity-5 rating. This impressive example is tied with the Naftzger Collection coin for finest known of the variety. This die marriage was first recorded by Frank Andrews in 1881, but it was not until the 1940s that a second had been found. In 1991, when John Wright had completed the manuscript for his middle date reference, he was aware of about 80 coins, and today there are possibly 100 in existence.
This remarkable example is a late die state coin with extensive sinking of the obverse die, a heavy crack through star 3, and a prominent die chip between stars 6 and 7. This is an outstanding example with deep olive and chocolate-brown color, blended with considerable lighter tan, probably faded from original red. It is highly unusual to find such an attractive specimen of this variety, as most are dark and on rough planchets. A prize cent.
Ex: Lennie Schramm (12/17/1993). Envelope Included.
