1817 N-4 R3+ PCGS graded AU50
Glossy mix of medium brown and chocolate with frosty lighter brown and tan in protected areas on the reverse. Smooth and quite attractive. The only notable marks are a faint curved scratch under star 2 and a collection of tiny scratches under CA in AMERICA. Nicely struck MDS with a strong die crack through stars 12 & 13, the base of the date, and on to the dentils under the left point of star 1. Another crack connects stars 1-3 and there is a radial crack extending down from the earlier crack to the dentils under star 1. An attractive cent that is graded EF45 net EF40 and CC#10 in the Noyes census, his photo #38646. Our grade is net VF35+, very close to EF40. A very nice example of a tough die variety. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label.
