This is a James Monroe Peace and Friendship Native American Indian Peace medal dated 1817. The medal is 76mm and shows a bronzed copper construction. The reverse of the medal shows the "Peace And Friendship" wording with a tomahawk and peace pipe crossed over top of a clothed hand and unclothed hand shaking. The reverse shoes the left Indian's hand pointing at the "F" in "Friendship" indicative of being from an original die. The large size medal shows an original presentation clothe collar from the 19th century having an embroidered pattern and metal fringe. The obverse was designed by Moritz Furst and reads “James Monroe President of the U.S. A.D. 1817” with the reverse designed by John Reich. US Mint. Both Furst and Reich worked as engravers at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia, PA. The Indian peace medals were distributed to Indian tribe Chief’s by the U.S. Government as a part of diplomatic relations. Collar is (as pictured) 20.75”L. Comes in a glass top display box that is 14.25”x20.25” and 1.25” thick.
