1817 50C MS63 NGC. O-111a, R.1. The obverse die of this common variety is instantly recognized by the die line that hangs down from the ribbon end in the right field. As it was not used for any other die marriages, this feature is diagnostic for the variety. The experienced numismatist is familiar with these types of characteristics that identify certain varieties and simplify the attribution process. The reverse of this example has a fine die crack from the arrowheads to the olive leaves and the top of U. The presence of this crack is a requirement for the O-111a die state, although it is usually more advanced than on the present intermediate die state piece. A pleasing Mint State example, this lovely half dollar has a sharp strike and satin luster beneath vibrant gold, olive, and iridescent toning.
From The Westmoreland, Virginia Collection, Part Two.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
