1817/3 50C MS64 PCGS. O-101, R.3. This piece is from the famous Eliasberg Collection that this cataloger had the pleasure of describing a decade ago. It is a sharply struck example of the scarcer early die state with no evidence of the reverse die crack that is commonly seen. This piece has splendid original golden-brown toning with peripheral iridescence over fully lustrous and lightly reflective surfaces. A few faint hairlines can be seen in the fields, especially on the obverse. Noticeable clash marks can be seen on the reverse. The 1817/3 overdate is a popular variety with collectors, as the overdate features are easily visible, even without magnification. It is such "naked eye" varieties that garner the most attention among collectors. Although we are certain that this coin is not the finest known example of the variety, we are equally certain that it is in the Condition Census that includes the six finest known pieces. It is the finest certified by PCGS, with only three finer coins graded by NGC. Population: 2 in 64, 0 finer (12/06).
Ex: John G. Mills Collection (S.H. and H. Chapman, 4/1904); J.M.
