1817<1C> 13 Stars. N-7, R.3. XF45 NGC. VF20 EAC. The seldom seen early die state of this variety with no evidence of the mouse-like die chip on top of Liberty's head. Only a few examples of the early die state have been identified. None were in either of the Robinson Brown sales, the Jack Robinson sale, or the Wes Rasmussen sale. Dennis Mendelson's graded VG8 and Frankenfield's was just Good 4. In the Frankenfield catalog, it was noted that fewer than 10 of this die state were known, and only one of those graded better than Fine 12, referring to this specimen. Mostly chocolate brown with some orange coloration on the reverse. Surfaces have the usual handling marks and some light porosity, as well as minor to moderate scratches, the latter blended with the balance of the coin. It is quite difficult to emphasize the importance of this opportunity for the advanced die state collector.
Ex: Leo Young; Del Bland (8/1968); Garry Fitzgerald (11/13/1968). Envelope Included.
