1817<1C> 13 Stars. N-4, R.3--Obverse Scratched, Corroded--NCS. Fine Details. Good 4 EAC. Apparently the terminal die state for the variety, or very nearly so. An area below the obverse crack, left of the first 1 in the date, has broken away to form a rim break. In the 1991 Superior catalog of the Mendelson Collection, this was described as "semi-unique." At the time, only two examples of the die state were known. The obverse surface is dark brown, nearing ebony, and is lightly scratched and noticeably porous. The reverse is similarly corroded, but much lighter olive-brown in color.
Ex: Fred Borcherdt; Dennis Mendelson (Superior, 2/3/1991), lot 222. Envelope Included.
