JAMES MADISON & JAMES MONROE, 4th President of the United States and the 5th President of the United States.
War of 1812 Era, Nominated for Military Appointment dated on August 1, 1814, text reading: “and by and with the advice and consent of the Senate” Military Commission fully executed and Signed, February 20, 1815, Partially-Printed Document Signed, “James Madison” as President and “Jas. Monroe,” as Secretary of War, Framed, Very Fine. This very unusual and rare style Military Commission form, grants the rank of Second Lieutenant in the 29th Infantry Regiment to James W. Lansing.

The wording of this document states that the United States has, “special trust and confidence in the patriotism, valor, fidelity and abilities” of the appointee. The handwritten portion states for the President, “I have nominated, and by and with the advice and consent of the Senate” have appointed him to that rank. This original Vellum document concludes with a bold deep brown 2.75” long signature, “James Madison” as President, and a 2” long dark brown signature, “Jas Monroe” as Secretary of War. At bottom left is a well embossed paper and red wax Official Seal of the United States War Department. This commission is in nice condition, sight seen only, not having been removed from its decorative professionally frame, measuring to 18.5” x 23.5” viewed through a special ultraviolet reducing Plexiglas, ready to hang on display.
