1815/2 50C MS63 NGC. O-101, R.2. This date is important because of its limited availability in only one die pairing. After the War of 1812, when depositors started to bring silver deposits to the mint for coinage, unused dies from 1812 were retrieved from storage and a 5 was punched over the 2. This obverse die and a single accompanying reverse die were the only set of ides used to produce the estimated 47,150 pieces dated 1815 (Al Overton, Early Half Dollar Die Varieties).
A melange of gray, sky-blue, olive-green, gold-tan, and crimson patination bathes both sides of this sharply struck piece. Extensive clash marks are noted on both obverse and reverse, but there are no outstanding abrasions to report. Overall, quite a decent MS63 specimen. Census: 7 in 63, 9 finer (10/07).

Coin Engraver: John Reich

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
