1814 Bust Half Dollar NGC MS63
Half Dollars 1814 Overton-104A. NGC graded Mint State 63. Extensive die cracks on both sides, as per the Overton reference work. A genuinely pleasing original toned specimen. The color is sleek and glossy, ranging from antique silver to lavender gray and steel blue iridescence for the obverse, with oceans of beautiful sunset-red hues on the reverse. A prettier combination on such an early silver piece as a Bust Half Dollar, would be hard to duplicate! "In eighteen and fourteen we took a little trip, Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip, We took a little bacon and we took a little beans, And met the bloody British near the town of New Orleans. . ." So begins the charming Johnny Horton tune heralding the final battle of the War of 1812 between ourselves and Great Britain that settled for all time our hegemony over a continent that "destiny" mandated America to rule. (Further into the piece the lyrics say something about powdering an alligator's behind.) This handsome half dollar was struck on the coining press at Philadelphia during the height of that little tussle.
Superior Galleries was founded in 1929 and has been a leader in
