1814 50C MS65 NGC. O-109, R.2. Al Overton lists a single MS65 example as the finest 1814 O-109 Capped Bust Half in his Condition Census. That fact alone would confirm the importance of the present Gem among specialists, but technical grade is not the only positive attribute. The eye appeal is beautiful, and both sides are originally preserved with dappled reddish-russet and golden-orange shadings toward the denticles. The balance of the surfaces are overlaid in warm silver-gray shades. At first glance, the reverse appears to be more sharply struck than the obverse. In actuality, both sides are uncommonly crisp for the type with minimal softness of detail in a few isolated areas. There are typically few abrasions for the assigned grade, and the luster is full with a richly frosted sheen. An obverse spot on Liberty's portrait above the first 1 in the date appears to be the most useful pedigree marker. NGC has seen only 12 1814 Halves of all die marriages in MS65, and a mere nine finer (10/02).From the Trane Collection.
