1814/3 $5 MS64 NGC. B. 1-A, Miller-121, the only known dies, R.4. Within the elusive Capped Head Left series of Half Eagle, the 1814 (all being struck as overdates) is normally grouped with the more "common" issues such as the 1813 and 1818. Common, of course, is a relatively and somewhat misleading term when applied to this heavily melted type. Surviving 1814/3 Fives, of which perhaps a mere 60-70 examples are known from an original mintage 15,454 pieces, are generally found in XF to AU grades and are apt to be poorly struck about the obverse stars and peripheral legends. This wonderfully preserved specimen exceeds the normal expectations on both counts. Both sides exhibit a rich, satiny brilliance under a delightful layer of reddish patina. Most of the obverse stars are fully defined and those that aren't come very close. As with any 1814/3 seen by this cataloger, bold die clashing is seen in the obverse fields and across the center of the portrait. Faint clash marks are also visible, though not as dramatic, on the reverse. One of just a handful of Uncirculated 1814/3 Half Eagles we have offered over the past decade and handily (by two points) the finest of the lot. Population: 8 in 64, 0 finer (1/05). Lot:7786
