1813<$5> MS64 NGC. Breen 1-B, Breen-6467, Miller-120, R.5. There are differing opinions regarding the rarity of this variety, although it is clearly not as plentiful as the Breen 1-A die marriage. Walter Breen did not describe this reverse in his monograph on the early half eagles, but he did mention it in an update covering new varieties of the various gold denominations. Both of his booklets were published by the Hewitt brothers in the 1960s. Early U.S. Half Eagles, 1795-1838 was published in 1966 and New Varieties of $1, $2.50 and $5.00 United States Gold was published in 1968. These references built on the previous study of Edgar H. Adams that was published in the Coin Collectors Journal three decades earlier. Adams mentioned the second reverse in his notes.
This issue begins the long series of early half eagles that continued through 1834 and the end of the old tenor coinage. Throughout the entire span of dates, only 1813 and 1820 are relatively available to type collectors. Although 1814, 1818, and 1823 are considered available dates as well, all other dates are major rarities. As 1813 is also the first year of the Capped Head design, it is almost always the date chosen by type collectors. Mint Engraver John Reich created this design, which is a modification of his own earlier Capped Bust design produced from 1807 to 1812. His signature scalloped star is clearly visible on the obverse. Star 13 has a small indentation in the ray closest to the border. In addition to obverse design changes, the reverse was modified slightly from the earlier type. The leaves and berries are slightly larger, and the arrowheads are more triangular and spaced farther apart.
This specimen is a lovely example with fully brilliant yellow-gold surfaces and frosty luster. Most of the design elements are sharply defined, although slight weakness is noted at the l

Import
