1813 $5 MS63 NGC. CAC. Breen-6467, BD-2, R.4. The first S in STATES is closer to the scroll end than on the more-common BD-1, rated as rarity R.2. The 1813 begins the Capped Bust to Left half eagle series, which would culminate in 1834 with wholesale meltings of the entire production, as the gold content of the pieces exceeded their face value. Since only the 1813 and 1820 issues are readily available, the 1813 is usually chosen for type purposes.
The present example offers beautifully lustrous greenish-gold surfaces that are well struck and high-end for the assigned grade, as CAC also attests. The few light contact marks observed are minuscule, and mostly well removed from the prime focal areas.

Coin Engraver: John Reich

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
