1813<$5> MS62 PCGS. B. 1-A, Breen-6467, Miller-119, R.3. Two varieties are known for the first date of the new Capped Head design type, a modification of John Reich's earlier Capped Bust design. The reverse was also modified slightly from the previous design. It is unknown why John Reich changed the designs in this year. A single obverse die was combined with two reverse dies to produce 95,428 coins during the year. Given the availability of coins in all grades through lower Mint State levels, it seems reasonable that the entire annual production was actually dated 1813. This is the only date in the series (1813-1834) that can be considered a common issue. A fully lustrous example, this half eagle has brilliant yellow surfaces with a hint of green coloration. It is nicely detailed with strong design elements on both sides. Faint clash marks are visible on both sides, and a small patch of die rust can be seen below star 4. A few minor surface marks are consistent with the grade.
