1812 $5 MS63 PCGS. Wide 5D, Breen-6466, BD-1, R.3. Final year of the Capped Bust Left type and one of the most frequently encountered dates of the type as well. In Breen's monograph on early half eagles from the early 1960s, he speculated that "probably many coins delivered in 1813 were from 1812 dies." While this has not yet been proven to be the case, it would explain the perceived disparity in availability between the two dates that Breen noted at that time. Since then, however, that disparity has narrowed, and today the two dates have nearly identical availability.
The striking details on the obverse of this piece are especially sharp, and the reverse shows only the slightest softness of highpoint definition. Excellent mint luster and minimally abraded. A few adjustment marks were not struck out of the planchet on the highpoint of Liberty's cheek and end of the bust. The green-gold color shows a light overlay of reddish patina. A wonderful type coin.

Coin Engraver: John Reich

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
