1812 $5 MS61 PCGS. Wide 5D, Breen-6466, BD-1, R.3. 1812 was the final year for Reich's Draped Bust motif on gold coinage, although the portrait style continued on silver coins as late as 1838. The recorded mintage for 1812 was 58,087 pieces, but most of these pieces were exported as bullion, and promptly melted following their overseas arrival. This fortunate survivor has blushes of peach toning, and displays ample glimmering luster. The obverse is well struck, and the reverse shows only moderate incompleteness on the shield, and on the scroll near 10:30. All Wide 5D half eagles exhibit a curious broad, curved die scratch across the horizontal shield lines, probably because of a slip of a tool that no doubt caused considerable exasperation and embarrassment on the part of the engraver.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
