1812 $5 MS61 NGC. Wide 5D, Breen-6466, BD-1, R.3. An attractive yellow-gold example with ample luster and a good strike. Only the eagle's neck and the junction of the left (facing) wing are incompletely brought up. One thin mark is found beneath the right scroll end, otherwise quite smooth for the MS61 level. 1812 was the final year of John Reich's Capped Bust Left design. The reverse design was unmodified for the new 1813 type, but the obverse head was enlarged and the cleavage removed. According to Breen, Reich also engraved the device punch for the 1813 to 1815 half eagles, which Chief Engraver Robert Scot modified for the 1818 issues.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
