1812 $5 MS61 NGC. Breen-6466, BD-1, R.3. There is some disturbance to the luster on the high areas of the design, a few light abrasions, a small scratch on the reverse below the right-hand portion of the banner, and the eagle's neck is weakly impressed and along the tops of its wings. However, this is a fairly lustrous example of the final year of the Reich design, minted in far lower numbers than in the previous two years but evidently saved during the War of 1812 in small numbers, because (as Breen pointed out) a small group of these was discovered many years ago. This was evidently the source for most of the known pieces--which, thankfully, makes this historic date affordable for collectors of our early gold issues.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
