1811 $5 Small 5 MS65 NGC. Breen-6464, BD-2, R.3. As a date, the 1811 is a relatively common member of the Capped Bust Left series of half eagles, being of similar difficulty in Uncirculated grades as the 1807 and 1812, and only slightly more challenging than the 1809/8 and 1810. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth write in their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins: "This is one of two major varieties for the year, and it is seemingly the more common of the two varieties. However, a surprising number of Mint State examples are known, including a fair number of MS63 coins, making this one of the more affordable examples of this type in Uncirculated condition."
The presently offered specimen is undoubtedly the nicest we have ever had the privilege of auctioning. Not only are the vibrant green-gold surfaces alive with satiny, frosted luster, but the strike is profoundly bold in virtually all areas. A pinpoint mark on Liberty's cheek is centrally placed, yet so small as to be invisible to the naked eye, and trivial planchet flaking between the eagle's beak and left wing has no effect on the coin's technical status. Magnificent quality, not just for the issue, but as a Capped Bust Left half eagle of any date. The reverse has faint die cracks joining the tops of a few letters, but these are the only die defects noted on either side, other than faint clash marks below Liberty's ear. Census: 5 in 65, 1 finer (4/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
