1811 1/2 C Restrike PR66 Red and Brown NGC.
1811 1/2 C Restrike PR66 Red and Brown NGC. A Superb representative of the elusive Mickley Restrike, invariably seen with extensive die rust about the devices on both obverse and reverse. Produced from reworked (and obviously rusted) dies from the Philadelphia Mint that were sold as scrap steel in 1816. In a somewhat mismatched combination of dies, the 1811 B-2 obverse was paired with the 1802 B-2 reverse, both dies being reworked to enhance the device details. It is believed that only a dozen or so pieces were struck by early numismatist Joseph J. Mickley. The first auction appearance was in Cogan's J.N.T. Levick sale in 1859. Breen enumerates 10 examples in his Encyclopedia of United States Half Cents 1793-1857. Much coppery-red color survives in the protected areas of this obviously well preserved example and all details are characteristically bold. Obviously, this is a rare and desirable piece from the fringe of 19th century American numismatics, with all the charisma, color, and charm that make collecting such a popular hobby. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
