1811<1/2 C> C-1, B-1, Low R.4. Die State 4--Corroded--NCS. VG Details. Good 4 EAC. Wide date, star 13 centered; Berry centered below A2. This is the extremely rare "two-star" break with only about half a dozen examples known, possibly as many as eight, and all in low grades, such as the Breen Die State IV plate coin. The rim break envelopes three points of star 1 and two points of star 2, along the earlier die crack through those stars, a crack that continues to star 4. A branch of this crack formed from star 2 to the rim, and it is that crack that initially limited the progression of this die break. NCS described this example as having VG details, although we feel that a better description would be Good details. The devices are more or less worn smooth and most of the stars and lettering are complete, although some are weak near the borders. Although the surfaces are microscopically corroded, this is an attractive example with pleasing medium brown color and no other defects. In the 1990 Stack's catalog offering this same coin, the cataloger clearly understated its importance, giving it a single line description without a photograph.
Ex: Adrian Ross; Stack's (6/1990), lot 1156. Envelope Included.
