1811<1/2 C> C-1, B-1, Low R.4. Die State 1--Environmental Damage--NCS. Unc Details. VF35 EAC. Wide date, star 13 centered; Berry centered below A2. This is the Manley Plate Coin for the variety (enlarged) and also for State 1. Perfect obverse die without any evidence of the die crack through the first four stars on the left. This is apparently the most common of the die states, and the one die state that is available from time to time in higher grades. One of the most important dates among the entire series of business strike half cents, and considered a key-date along with 1796, 1802, and 1831, although 1811 clearly ranks fourth on this list. Cohen-1 is the scarcer of two varieties for the year, and clearly also the more interesting of these two for its varying die states. The two obverse dies are quite similar in appearance and not always easy to distinguish from each other. This is especially so in lower grades. A quick key to attribution is the relationship of star 13 to the hair curl and border. Cohen-1 has this star approximately center between the curl and border, while Cohen-2 has this star much closer to the border.
Intermingled chestnut and dark steel color on both sides is interrupted by minor corrosion and verdigris. Light scratches may be seen on Liberty's cheek, jaw, and neck, and additional minor abrasions are visible in the fields on both sides. A few other light scratches are visible inside the wreath above HALF. The cataloger for Superior's sale of the Albert O. Woods Collection pointed to die file marks from the top of the first 1 to the bust, suggesting that these are indicative of the earliest die state. However, the same file marks are visible on the high-grade example, with the four-star die break described below.
Ex: Albert O. Woods; Superior (9/1986), lot 3032. Envelope Included.
