1811/0 1C MS63 Brown NGC. S-286, R.3. The only 1811/0 cent certified MS63 by either grading service, with none finer. We have had the opportunity to offer this coin for auction twice previously, and the description we used the first time we offered this piece in 1997 (when it was graded MS62) is as apt now as when it was written 10 years ago.

"The finest S-286 known by a wide margin, being unlisted on the Condition Census in the Noyes' reference, which lists the C.C. as 55-50-45-45-40 (multiples). This piece was apparently unknown to copper specialists until its appearance in the James A. Stack Sale in March, 1995. It was also used in the 50th anniversary edition of the Guide Book ... representing the Classic type at the top of page 85.
In addition to the high grade of this piece, what is also remarkable is the presence of some underlying mint red on each side. As explained in a November 1994 issue of The Numismatist by Bob Julian, 'This variety often is seen on dark, defective planchets, which probably came into contact with saltwater on the long trip from England. (Kegs of planchets usually were stored as ballast in the ship's hold.)' However, the surfaces on this piece have a light brown caste overall with even, faded mint red that glows subtly beneath the overlay of brown patina. The striking details are well defined also with the only mentionable area of softness being on the peripheral stars on the left side of the obverse. Identifiable as the Stack coin and the Redbook plate piece by a small area of porosity on the bust of Liberty, a tiny spot in front of Liberty's mouth, and a small cut to the right of the lowest haircurl. An outstanding Classic Cent and a rare opportunity to acquire a solid Mint State coin that retains faint remnants of mint red." EAC 45.
Ex: James A.
