Rare pair of Empire Neoclassical Ornithological bird Paris porcelain cabinet plates. From a Baltimore Maryland estate. Circa 1810. Each plate is hand painted with exotic birds based on copperplate engravings from Francoise Levaillant 1753-1825 Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux 1801-1806. The principal artist of this book was Jacque Barraband. He also decorated the dinning room in Napoleon's chateau, St. Cloud and supplied bird drawings to the Sevre porcelain factory for a dinner service of exotic birds for Napoleon Bonaparte. After this famous dinner service was made it was coped by all the top Paris porcelain factory's like Schoelcher the painted bird porcelain was purchased by European aristocracy and also shipped to American ports like Baltimore, where Betsy Patterson married Napoleon Bonaparte brother Jerome Bonaparte on Christmas Eve, 1803. The early 19th century plates have borders of lavishly gilded gold and green bands and burnished engraved flower borders around the plates. The exotic painted birds are perched on a leafy branch with the French name of the bird painted in black on the branch. Each plate is marked on the back in iron red by the Parisian firm of Marc Schoelcher , which established an important presence in America. One plate has a repaired rim chip. .
