1810 $5 Large Date, Large 5 MS61 PCGS. Breen-6459, BD-4, R.2. This variety is undoubtedly the most plentiful of all 1810 half eagles, and it is possibly the most plentiful half eagle variety coined from 1795 to 1834. It is also a highly distinctive Guide Book type, with the Large Date obverse and Large Denomination reverse. The new early gold reference by John Dannreuther lists four different die varieties for the date, although some past studies suggest that there may actually be five die varieties. All of this confusion was the result of an incorrect identification by Walter Breen. Fortunately, Dannreuther sorted out this problem, along with several other similar problems in the early gold series, to create the most accurate possible text on the subject. This attractive piece is sharply stuck with frosty yellow-gold surfaces and only minor abrasions on each side. A few fine diagonal lines at the center of the obverse tend to limit the grade to the lower Mint State level.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
