1810<1C> MS65 Brown NGC. S-285, B-2, R.2. This important cent has been known to the Large cent community since the 19th century, and has long been regarded as one of the two finest known examples of the S-285 variety. In its appearance in Abe Kosoff's auction of the Dr. Sloss collection, the present piece was graded MS70. More recently, William C. Noyes in his 1999 Official CQR/Noyes Condition Census listed it in sole first place for the S-285, grading it Choice MS65. Its close competitor for the coveted honor of finest known is the DuPont/Gene Reale piece, which Noyes graded Choice MS63. The lustrous and smooth surfaces are about evenly divided into medium brown and faded gold, and the strike is sharp aside from the first few stars. The profile is lightly strike doubled, and the reverse is clashed inside the upper wreath. Pinpoint flecks at 1 o'clock and beneath the center of the bust truncation identify this memorable and formidably pedigreed example.
