1809/8 $5 MS64 PCGS. Breen-6458, BD-1, R.3. Historical numismatic literature describes this obverse as an 1809/8 overdate. While there is obviously "something" under the digit 9, current students of the series have begun to question the status of this as an overdate, a recut date, or simply a defective die. Whatever is eventually decided really doesn't matter as this is the only known die variety for the date. It is considered a relatively common variety, and pieces are routinely available in the lowest Mint State grades. However, Choice or Gem Mint State pieces remain important rarities. This is a fully lustrous and sharply struck representative with satiny yellow-gold luster and sharp design features. Population: 21 in 64, 3 finer (12/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
