1809/8 $5 MS62 NGC. Breen-6458, B. 1-A, R.3. This overdate variety is either the most common half eagle issue from 1807 through 1812, or it is the second most common behind the 1810 Large Date, Large 5 variety. Even in Mint State grades, this variety is quite plentiful. According to Mint records, only 33,875 examples of this overdate issue were coined, although the actual figure may have been higher, perhaps including some of the 100,287 half eagles struck in 1810. This is a fully lustrous light yellow-gold example with soft, frosty luster and a hint of green color. The surfaces are lightly abraded, and this is expected at the grade level. This is a lovely and highly desirable example of the variety for the date specialist or the variety collector.
Purchased from Abner Kreisberg Corporation on September 17, 1980 for $6,500.
From The Beverly Hills Collection. Lot:7781
