1809/8 $5 MS62 NGC. B. 1-A, Miller-108, the only known dies, R.3. Very well struck, the richly frosted features rise powerfully above the partially reflective fields. A few scattered contact marks preclude a higher grade assessment, but both sides are bright and free of unduly bothersome contact marks. Since many of these early Half Eagle issues remained in banks' cash reserves, extant representatives usually grade Extremely Fine, About Uncirculated, or Mint State. One should not, however, assume that this issue is common and easily obtainable in any level of preservation. On the contrary, as many of the 33,875 pieces produced this year were melted in the aftermath of the Mint Act of 1834, any survivor is a numismatic treasure of significant rarity and even greater desirability.
