1809<10C> MS62 NGC. JR-1, R.4. The only variety of the year. John Reich made new dies for the dimes struck in 1809, but curiously few examples were set aside. As a result, dimes from this year are usually seen in Fine or lower grades. At the MS62 level this is a coin of considerable note for the 19th century type collector. Fewer than two dozen 1809 dimes have been certified above the MS62 level and only four other coins have been graded MS62 (all by NGC). The surfaces of this piece are satiny with a couple of layers of deeper color. Most of each side is deep blue-gray, while the devices are outlined with golden patination. The devices are a bit softly struck, and close examination of the reverse shows shallow, diagonal roller marks. Lightly abraded for the grade with a couple of minor marks in the upper right obverse field.
