1809<1/2 C> Normal Date. C-3, B-4, R.1. Die State 1. MS63 Brown NGC. AU55 EAC. Wide date, 09 close; High leaf just beyond S, ES high. Two die states recorded by Manley are distinguished by the presence (early states) or absence (late states) of border dentilation on either side. Faint obverse clash marks are clearly visible below Liberty's chin, although Ron Manley had never seen an example with clash marks by the time his book was published. This example, apparently as always, has the reverse rotated about 30 degrees counterclockwise. Manley commented that both die states of this variety are known only with a counterclockwise rotation of 20 to 30 degrees. Walter Breen made an extremely misleading statement in his Half Cent Encyclopedia: "Rarely shows reverse rotated at various angles to obverse." Reading this, it could be surmised that very few examples have any rotation from normal, and that such coins should be worth a premium. In reality, this is clearly not the case. Dark chocolate surfaces have hints of lighter chestnut color on both sides. All design elements are sharply detailed. A curved, line-like defect at the border over star 8 is the only pedigree marker that we can find, and this is extremely light.
